Is this heaven? PDF Print E-mail
Jun 11, 2006 at 12:00 AM
The world cup kicked off in Germany on the 9th. I''ve watched 5 games over the weekend, with one more to go before the day is done. This must be a little like heaven... The most exciting by far was the Sweden vs. Trindad and Tabago match. How a team from a nation of barely over a million made it to the games is a feat in itself. But holding Sweden to a 0-0 draw... unreal! That''s what the world cup is all about. Passion!ABC and ESPN will televise every single game. Too bad we won''t get time off from work to watch the games. You know they actually do that in other countries, everything grinds to a halt so everyone can watch the games. In Ivory Coast they called a cease fire in the civil war when their team qualified for the world cup. And perhaps the team will actually help bring some sort of resolution to the war if they advance in the tournament.I have some criticism of the coverage though:- Who decided on Brent Musburger hosting the half time shows? This guy has no knowledge of soccer and has about as much passion for the game as a cold urinal. How about getting some younger broadcasters who''ve actually played the game?- Who the heck is Dave O''Brien? He announced the Germany vs. Costa Rica match. This guy has no clue about soccer. If he had any sense he should have shut up and let Marcelo Balboa, his partner and an accomplished soccer player, announce the game. - I''m going to have a cow if I hear any more comparisons between soccer and basketball or baseball. No, playing in the world cup is not similar to standing in the batter''s box with a 3-2 count in the 9th with 2 outs. It is infinitely more important. Regardless of what I think of broadcast coverage, it''s going to be a great month for soccer. If you''ve never watched a soccer game, give it a shot. You''ll find out why it''s aptly called ''the beautiful game
