2005 World Population Data Sheet PDF Print E-mail
Aug 25, 2005 at 01:00 AM
I watched a press conference by researchers at the Population Reference Bureau on C-Span last night. They put out a datasheet (PDF) this week highlighting inequalities in health and well-being between the developed and less developed countries.
Some facts to think about:
  • The world''s population is growing at a rate of 1.2% per year. That''s an additional 80 million people per year and 99% of this growth is in less developed countries.
  • Half of the world''s population lives on less that $2 a day.
  • Two thirds of the population of the world''s poorest region - sub-Saharan Africa and Asia live in rural areas. Almost 80% of these people lack access to safe drinking water.

While we have made progress in lowering infant mortality and increasing life expectancy in the world''s poorest regions, there is still a lot of work left to do.
